Mary Waterhouse was John William Waterhouse's half-sister and, according to Dr John Physick, great-nephew of Waterhouse, the model for Waterhouse's famous painting The Lady of Shalott.

Mary Waterhouse was John William Waterhouse's half-sister and, according to Dr John Physick, great-nephew of Waterhouse, the model for Waterhouse's famous painting The Lady of Shalott:

"Last week, on Friday, 10 May, I unveiled the English Heritage's Blue Plaque on Waterhouse's house at 10 Hall Road, St. John's Wood, London. Waterhouse, known in the family by his nickname Nino, was the uncle and godfather of my father, his namesake, Nino William Physick. My father's mother was the artist's sister Mary. Nearly seventy years ago, she told me that her brother used her portrait as the model for the Lady of Shalott in the Tate Gallery." (John Physick, May 2002)
