Circe background information

The gods have guided me here; so I'll ask if any knows the motivation behind the Waterhouse-Circe paintings. Some might attribute this subject (Circe) to his fascination with Greco-Roman antiquity, but I suspect more arcane 'elements' coming into play. Just wanted to thank you for your invaluable help! I was mesmerized by Trippi's cogent presentation. It explained much. I was hoping for something a little deeper, perhaps in the way of the inner circle, but the explanation was none-the-less illuminating (ahhh...couldn't resist a pun). Again, thank you very much.
