Here are links to two slideshow videos that attempt to give a summary of 'The Mysterious Models'. :) J.W. Waterhouse - The Mysterious Models - Part I includes family members and a family friend. J.W. Waterhouse - The Mysterious Models - Part II gives a survey of the names of models we now know. Alice Arter 'Miss Bantick' (Ethel Bantock) Harry Beresford Angelo Colarossi 'Miss Kate Double' Beatrice Flaxman 'Miss Muriel Foster' 'Miss Lloyd' Agnes Richardson Edith Richardson Read about six of the names at: 'Letter to Miss Lloyd' by Julia Kerr. and 'A Waterhouse Sketch Discovered' by Scott Thomas Buckle. A third video, John William Waterhouse - A Sonata of Beauty is a collection of studies, sketches and drawings. The videos are part of the WaterhouseArt collection. There are additional videos at WaterhouseExhibition that celebrate the Art of J. W. Waterhouse and the Upcoming Waterhouse Retrospective Exhibition (December 2008-January 2010).

 RESPONSES:

First of all, both videos are beautifully done. Splendid. The first video mentioned a poem, "Jessie", included in the catalogue entry for the painting "Whispered Words" in 1875. Has this poem been published elsewhere? Was it written by Waterhouse? Do you know where I could read it? Is it alright if I share these videos on my website using YouTube's embed feature? Or would you prefer for me to just provide a text link to the videos? I would love to share them with others. The women who modeled for Pre-Raphaelite and Victorian artists are fascinating to me; it is interesting to learn their stories. That was the impetus of my website. But I confess that although I love the works of Waterhouse, I have not delved deeply into his life or that of his wife...I knew little about his "mysterious models" and I enjoyed your videos very much.
Hi Stephanie, Thank you for your comments ... feel free to share the videos in the way you prefer (both are set to allow embedding). You probably were going to, but please be sure to provide the links to the articles by Julia - http://www.johnwilliamwaterhouse.com/correspondence/letter-to-miss-lloyd.html and Scott - http://www.johnwilliamwaterhouse.com/the-models/a-waterhouse-sketch-discovered.html As for the poem ... Anthony Hobson and Peter Trippi included it in their books on Waterhouse. Peter writes, "... the large oil Whispered Words celebrated romantic love visually and with a poem printed in its catalogue entry. In 1856 William Waterhouse had provided a sentimental poem for his painting, The Neglected Child; his son probably wrote the one for Whispered Words, which contains his sister's name: This couple lived some time ago, Perhaps two thousand years or so, Yet I am pretty sure I know Exactly what he said. For it was only Wednesday week My lips were close to Jessie's cheek, When she looked just like this fair Greek, And blushed as rosy red. --------------------------------------------------------- Best wishes ...
Thanks again Cathy. I decided not to embed the videos, since most visitors simply watch the embedded videos on my site. And while I love that, I really didn't want them to miss out on discovering the Waterhouse youtube channel or the articles. So I just included links. http://www.preraphaelitesisterhood.com
Thanks for including this with your always interesting postings at preraphaelitesisterhood.com. It's appreciated.
The videos (as a sort of outline) are being used to make a start at updating the article, The Mysterious Models of John William Waterhouse.

New URL:
The Mysterious Models of John William Waterhouse

Oh, Cathy, I had not realized that I neglected to link to The Mysterious Models article! I have just edited my post and included it.
Hi Stephanie, Thank you for also including the link to the article. It just happened that I finished the initial part of using the videos to update The Mysterious Models page so included information about that in a second posting ... after my thanks to you for linking to the videos. It was just a general announcement ... but, I appreciate you including it in your posting. :) It makes the circle complete. You should probably change the second paragraph, though, and instead of "JohnWilliamWaterhouse.com has created two new videos ..." have WaterhouseArt has created ..." with a link to the YouTube channel ... http://youtube.com/profile?user=WaterhouseArt . (johnwilliamwaterhouse.com uses the YouTube channel, http://youtube.com/profile?user=artmagick .) :) Thanks again!
I've corrected the link. Thanks Cathy!
Thanks, Stephanie ... I didn't mind having it that way :) ... but, just thought the site administrator might prefer having the link to WaterhouseArt instead. I appreciate you including the information at your website! Kind regards, Cathy
