Brief Biography:

RIVIERE, Briton, R.A., R.E. (1840-1920)

Painter in oil and water-colour of genre, classical and animal subjects. Born in London on 14th August 1840, son of William Riviere (1806-76), a genre and portrait painter. Educated at Cheltenham College, where his father was drawing master, and at St. Mary Hall, Oxford. Went to live in Kent and worked as an illustrator for several English and American magazines. Exhibited at the R.A. from 1858. Settled in London in 1870 where he lived for the rest of his life. Elected A.R.A. 1878 and R.A. 1881. In 1881 he was elected a member of the R.E. but his membership lasted only a few months. Many of his works were engraved. Died on 20th April 1920.
