Brief Biography:POYNTER, Sir Edward John, P.R.A., R.W.S., R.E. (1836-1919) Painter of figure subjects and portraits. Born in Paris on 20th March 1836, son of the architect and painter Ambrose Poynter. Studied art in Paris under Gleyre 1856-59. Exhibited at the R.A. from 1861 and was elected A.R.A. 1868, R.A. 1876, R.E. 1881, R.W.S. 1883 and P.R.A. 1896-1918. Slade Professor 1871-75; Principal of National Art Training School, South Kensington, until 1881; Director of the National Gallery 1894-1905. Painted Greek and Roman subjects in the neo-classical style. Lived in London and died on 26th July 1919. Source: Dictionary of British Artists Working 1900-1950, Grant M. Waters, Eastbourne, 1975.
