Brief Biography:

PENROSE, James Doyle, R.H.A. (1862-1932)

Painter of portraits, historical subjects and landscapes. Born on 9th May 1862 at Michelstown, County Dublin, son of James Doyle Penrose, Snr. Studied art at South Kensington, at St. John's Wood, and at the R.A. Schools where he received a silver medal. Exhibited at the principal London galleries from 1889, mainly at the R.A. Principal works include The Prisoner in their Midst, Last Chapter and Queen Philippa interceding for the Burghers of Calais. Lived near Watford and died on 2nd January 1932.
