Brief Biography:

NOWELL, Arthur Trevethin, R.I., R.P. (1862-1940)

Painter in oil and water-colour of portraits, genre and landscapes. Born on 5th February 1862 at Garndiffith, Wales, son of a Wesleyan Minister. Educated at Dudley and Bury Grammar Schools. Studied art at Manchester School of Art, at the R.A. Schools where he won gold medals for landscape and historical painting, and in Paris. Travelled widely on the Continent, and visited Italy, Spain, Germany, France and Holland. Exhibited at the R.A. from 1885. Elected R.I. 1913. Lived in London for many years and died on 6th January 1940.
