Brief Biography:
LOGSDAIL, William, R.P., R.B.C., N.E.A.C. (1859-1944)
Painter of portraits, genre, town scenes and landscapes. Born in Lincoln on 25th May 1859. His father George Logsdail (1827-1905) was verger at Lincoln Cathedral for over fifty years and was a well-known and well respected Lincoln personality. Studied at Lincoln School of Art and under Verlat at the Antwerp Academy. Won gold medals for oil and water-colour painting at the R.C.A. 1875-76. Exhibited at the R.A. from 1877. Worked in Venice where he lived 1881-87 and 1892-1901 also in Sicily and Cairo. (He rented the Palazzo Contarini on the Madonna del 'Orto in Venice). Member of the N.E.A.C. 1886. Rented a studio at Primrose Hill from 1887. During his earlier years he painted mainly architectural subjects but from 1903 painted portraits exclusively. Lived at Noke, near Oxford, for many years and died there on 3rd September 1944.

Documented Relationship
- A neighbour of Waterhouse's at Primrose Hill Studios. Logsdail took a studio there in 1887 and remained for a few years.
- Logsdail counted Waterhouse as among his best friends; Frank Bramley was another very close friend of Logsdail's.
- In 1883, Waterhouse supported Logsdail's election to the Royal Academy (his support proved ineffective, and Logsdail was never to become a Royal Academician):
"...when Logsdail's friend and fellow artist J.W. Waterhouse approached Henry Woods R.A. regarding William's election he was told, "No he is young and can wait.""

- Logsdail painted Waterhouse and/or members of Waterhouse's family in at least three paintings: St Martin's-in-the-Fields, The Bank and Royal Exchange, and The Ninth of November.
- Waterhouse painted Logsdail's features for Logsdail's picture The Bank and Royal Exchange (the picture shows several of Logsdail's artist friends, and members of Waterhouse's family).
