Brief Biography:HERKOMER, Sir Hubert von, R.A., R.W.S., R.I., R.E. (1849-1914) Painted portraits, genre, and historical subjects in oil and water-colour. Born at Waal, Bavaria. Settled in Southampton 1857. Studied art at the R.C.A. under Sir Luke Fildes 1866. Exhibited at the R.A. from 1869, also at Suffolk Street and at the Grosvenor Gallery. Elected R.I. 1871, A.R.A. 1879, R.E. 1880, R.A. 1890, A.R.W.S. 1893, R.W.S. 1894 and V.P.R.W.S. 1896-97. Founded and directed the School of Art at Bushey 1883-1904, and Slade Professor of Fine Art, Oxford, 1885-94. Knighted 1907. Represented in several public collections. R.A.: Royal Academy R.W.S.: Royal Society of Painters in Water-Colours R.I.: Royal Institute of Painters in Water-Colours R.E.: Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers R.C.A.: Royal College of Art DOCUMENTED RELATIONSHIP:- Purchased Waterhouse's painting Ulysses and the Sirens for the Australian museum collection: Professor Herkomer, R.A., has accepted from the Government of Victoria an invitation to assume the duty of purchasing works of Art for the National Gallery now being founded at Melbourne. In this connection four pictures have already been purchased by Mr. Herkomer, including 'Ulysses and the Sirens' by Mr. J. W. Waterhouse, A.R.A.; 'The Crisis,' by Mr. F. Dicksee, A.R.A.; and a cattle-piece by Mr. R. Meyerheim. Source: The Art Journal, June 1891
