Brief Biography:

COPE, Sir Arthur Stockdale, R.A. (1857-1940)

Portrait and landscape painter. Born on 2nd November 1857, son of Charles West Cope, R.A. (1811-90). Studied art at Carey's and at the R.A. Schools. Exhibited at the R.A. regularly from 1876. Elected A.R.A. 1899 and R.A. 1910. Painted portraits of King Edward VII, King George V, Lord Kitchener, the German Kaiser and many other important figures of his day. Knighted 1917, K.C.V.O. 1927. Lived in London and Cornwall. Died on 5th July 1940.
