Brief Biography:

ARMOUR, George Denholm (1864-1949)

Painter and illustrator of hunting subjects. Born on 30th January 1864 at Waterside, Lanarkshire. Educated at St. Andrews. Studied at the Edinburgh School of Art and the R.S.A. Schools from 1880 to circa 1888. Settled in London and contributed to Punch from 1894, also to The Tatler and the Graphic. Exhibited at the R.A., R.S.A., G.I., etc. During World War I he commanded the Remount Depot in Salonica 1917-19. Awarded O.B.E. 1919. He produced many fine water-colours of huntsmen, their horses and the hounds, and was very popular in his day. His second wife was Violet Burton, a cousin to Sir Richard, the famous explorer. Lived for many years in Wiltshire and died on 17th February 1949.
