Harry Furniss's caricature of Waterhouse's The Magic Circle was published in Punch (22nd May 1886):
The caption reads "No. 450. Sarah B. in a New Piece. A big spooney scene."
"...The Magic Circle exemplifies Waterhouse's growing theatricality. The Academy observed that 'the subject is an intensely dramatic one', and Furniss concurred by providing Punch with a caricature of The Magic Circle showing Sarah Bernhardt tending a couldron with a giant spoon as a rat and theatre audience watch."
